Instagrid, a German technology company, has officially launched its GO RAIL portable battery power system in the UK, following its approval by Network Rail. This significant development introduces a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient alternative to conventional diesel generators, which have long been a staple in railway maintenance and construction projects across the country.
The GO RAIL system is designed to provide robust and reliable power for heavy-duty tools and equipment, essential for track work, signalling, and other critical infrastructure tasks. According to Instagrid, the units are capable of powering equipment for up to two days on a single charge, offering substantial operational flexibility and reducing the need for frequent refuelling or power source changes on remote sites.
This launch aligns with Network Rail's ambitious environmental targets, which include a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 for its non-traction energy and by 2045 for its wider emissions. The adoption of battery-powered solutions like GO RAIL is crucial in decarbonising operational activities, particularly those in off-grid locations where fossil fuel generators are currently prevalent.
Beyond the environmental benefits of reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality, the GO RAIL system also addresses issues such as noise pollution.
