Interior design experts are providing guidance on how to create a cosy home environment for autumn without resorting to overtly seasonal decorations. Lia Gold, winner of BBC’s Interior Design Masters, stated there are "so many ways to make your home feel cosier without it having to smell like pumpkin spice."
Gold suggests that changing the colours of cushions and throws is an "easiest and most affordable way" to welcome autumn, recommending fabrics such as wool in a herringbone weave. Tash Bradley, director of interior design at home decor brand Lick, described autumn's colour palette as "almost like opening your spice cupboard: saffron, turmeric, cinnamon and paprika." Bradley also noted that colours like teal and blue can offer a contrast to earthy shades.
Other recommendations include using patterned rugs, which Bradley says are more forgiving than plain options, and choosing a rug size larger than initially thought to help zone a space. Sheepskins are also suggested for adding texture and warmth, placed beside a bed or draped over furniture.
For lighting, Gold recommends swapping in spiral or straight LED filament bulbs with a colour temperature around 2,200K for a warm, amber-toned glow. Switching lampshades can also introduce deeper tones into a room.
