An invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito has been detected in East London, according to news from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This species is primarily responsible for transmitting diseases such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya viruses.
Professor Heather Ferguson, Professor of Infectious Disease Ecology at the University of Glasgow, described the finding as significant. She noted that while the mosquito is mainly found in the tropics, current UK climatic conditions are not likely suitable for these diseases to spread, though this could change with warming temperatures.
The detection was made after a member of the public reported it through the UKHSA's Mosquito Reporting Scheme. Professor Ferguson highlighted that citizen science reporting systems are effective for early detection of invasive mosquitoes.
Dr David Weetman, Reader in Vector Biology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, also stated the detection is important. However, he added that the risk associated with this particular finding appears low.
Experts reassure the public that the risk of infection from these diseases in the UK remains very low. It would require a large number of mosquitoes and sustained warm temperatures for efficient transmission, along with the mosquitoes biting individuals who acquired these diseases overseas.
