Ironman Leeds Swim Cancelled Due to Toxic Algae Bloom

The swimming section of Ironman Leeds was cancelled on August 16 due to a toxic blue-green algae bloom, affecting approximately 2,000 competitors.

  • The 2.4-mile swim at Ironman Leeds was cancelled on August 16 due to toxic blue-green algae.
  • Around 2,000 athletes competed in the event, which became a duathlon.
  • This was the fourth triathlon event in the UK cancelled this year due to algae blooms, according to British Triathlon.

The swimming segment of Ironman Leeds, held on August 16, was cancelled because of a bloom of toxic blue-green algae. This decision impacted around 2,000 competitors who had prepared for the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26-mile run.

Successive heatwaves this summer have contributed to more problems with freshwater swimming, leading to the algae bloom. Jack Chamberlain, one of the athletes, expressed disappointment, stating, "My life, for the past four or five months, has been completely consumed by this."

According to British Triathlon, this marks the fourth event this year where the swimming section has been cancelled due to algae blooms. The Ironman Group confirmed the decision was made in conjunction with Leeds City Council, citing the lake as "unsafe for swimming" due to the algae, which can be hazardous to humans.

While some athletes, like Marina Angela Andresen, appreciated the safety aspect of the cancellation, others felt more notice would have been beneficial. Daniel Start, a wild swimming author, noted that increasing pollution, alongside heat, contributes to these blooms, suggesting the problem is unlikely to recede soon.

Why this matters: The cancellation of the Ironman Leeds swim highlights the growing impact of environmental factors, such as heatwaves and pollution, on outdoor sporting events and public health.

What this means for you: If you participate in open-water swimming or triathlons, you may experience further event cancellations or warnings due to algae blooms, particularly during periods of hot weather.
