England striker Ivan Toney has pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The charge relates to an alleged incident at a Soho nightclub where he is accused of head-butting and punching a member of the public.
Appearing at Westminster magistrates court on Thursday, Mr Toney confirmed his name and date of birth before entering his plea. The court heard that on 6 December last year, an exchange of words allegedly occurred between the 30-year-old striker and Saber Da Silva at 100 Wardour Street, a live music venue.
Prosecutor Tom Heslop stated that the exchange reportedly led to the men "squaring up" before Mr Toney allegedly "lunged forward and head-butted the complainant, followed by a few punches." It was alleged that Mr Da Silva sustained injuries to his nose and fingers.
During the 12-minute hearing, District Judge Briony Clarke asked Mr Toney if he wished for the case to be heard at a magistrates or crown court. He chose a crown court, meaning his trial will proceed before a judge and jury.
Mr Toney was released on unconditional bail. The judge warned him that a warrant could be issued for his arrest if he fails to attend Southwark Crown Court at 9.30am on the appointed date.
