Newly-promoted Ipswich kicked off their Premier League campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland, thanks to a 90th-minute goal from substitute Jack Clarke. The winner came against his old club, securing a perfect start for Ipswich at Portman Road.
The match was Gary O’Neil’s first competitive fixture in charge of Ipswich, following his appointment in June. Six full debutants featured for the team, which had a busy summer with 12 new signings.
Ipswich took the lead in the 24th minute through Emersonn, who scored after excellent play from Julio Enciso. However, Sunderland equalised in the 39th minute with a superb free kick from Nilson Angulo, making it 1-1 at half-time. Clarke's late strike, capitalising on an Omar Alderete pass, sealed the win for Ipswich.
