Norwegian athlete Jakob Ingebrigtsen, 26, has shared insights into his demanding training philosophy after a successful period that saw him secure a European 5,000m gold, the World Ultimate 5,000m title, and a world road silver medal. These achievements came despite achilles surgery in February and a flu that persisted through May and June.
Ingebrigtsen's approach is characterised by meticulous control and consistency. He typically runs 175-180km per week, often completing two sessions a day, and prioritises training above almost all else. He states that if anything is "out of my control, then I’ve not done my job properly."
His regimen includes double threshold runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, aiming for sustainable fatigue, and a long run of 20km on Sundays. Ingebrigtsen also uses a treadmill to control variables and wears cushioned shoes, such as the Nike Zoom Fly 6, to aid recovery. He dismisses training in mud or grass, citing increased injury risk, and stresses the importance of individual accountability over a top-down coaching approach.
