Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender, could face bankruptcy after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a petition against him regarding an unpaid tax bill. Official court records confirm that HMRC submitted the filing on Wednesday afternoon.
An HMRC spokesperson stated that they take a supportive approach to customers with tax debts and only petition for bankruptcy "as a last resort."
A spokesperson for Carragher told BBC Sport that this is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed further and will be resolved imminently.
