Jamie Varley's facade as a devoted father and teacher has been shattered, exposing a horrific reality behind closed doors. The 37-year-old was found guilty of murdering his 13-month-old adopted son, Preston Davey, in July 2023. Varley had claimed the injuries were accidental, but medical evidence revealed 40 external and internal trauma injuries consistent with sexual abuse and assault.
Preston's life was marked by turmoil from birth, being placed with foster carers just five days after arrival. After four months living with Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, the baby endured routine ill-treatment, including physical assault and sexual abuse, according to prosecutors.
During an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, prosecutor Peter Wright KC argued that Varley's actions were motivated by a twisted desire for gratification. A police officer described Varley as 'arrogant' and 'self-centred', with a reputation for lying under questioning. The court heard of Varley's long-held dream to be a father, which he believed was unattainable as a gay man until meeting McGowan-Fazakerley.
The couple presented themselves as ordinary to their friends and neighbours in Staining, near Blackpool. Varley worked at South Shore Academy as head of year, while McGowan-Fazakerley held a northern sales management role. Their adoption application was approved in January 2023, with plans for Varley to take a year off work to care for Preston.
The case has sparked concerns about the robustness of local authority adoption processes across the UK and highlights the potential dangers of deception hidden behind a façade of normalcy. The devastating impact on those closest to Preston serves as a stark reminder that appearances can be misleading, even in cases involving vulnerable individuals.
