Japan's popular West Express Ginga sightseeing train has commenced its summer operations, offering travellers a unique way to explore the scenic Wakayama Prefecture. Operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West), the service provides both daytime and overnight journeys between Kyoto and Shingu, with tickets starting from an accessible £39.
The train, known for traversing the mountainous landscapes, sacred temple towns, and coastal hot spring resorts of Wakayama, began its seasonal run on 3 July 2026. It is scheduled to continue operating until 30 September 2026, providing ample opportunity for visitors to experience this distinctive mode of travel.
A key feature of the West Express Ginga experience is its extended stops at various stations along the route. These pauses allow passengers to book short, additional excursions, enhancing their journey with local flavour. Examples include sampling ramen near Wakayama station, viewing the distinctive Hashigui-iwa rocks close to Kushimoto station, or indulging in sushi at Kaina station, all available for an extra charge.
Passengers have a range of ticketing options to choose from. Standard fares begin at 8,470 yen (approximately £39) for online bookings. For those seeking more comfort, 'green car' upper-class tickets start from 11,450 yen (around £53), offering private compartments with seats that convert into beds and access to a private lounge in carriage number one. Family compartments, designed with a large bench seat that extends into a mattress for up to four people, are also available, alongside options for reclining seats or compartments with two bunk beds.
The train is well-equipped with amenities, including washrooms, free spaces with various seating arrangements, and facilities for wheelchair users. Notably, there is also a dedicated section of reclining seats for female use only, complemented by a women's changing room. The Kyoto/Osaka to Shingu overnight express runs on Mondays and Fridays, while the Shingu to Osaka/Kyoto daytime express operates on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets go on sale at 10am one month prior to each travel date.
