US Theme Park Bargains: Quassy in Connecticut Tops Affordability List

For UK families planning a US holiday, a new ranking reveals the most affordable theme parks. Quassy Amusement Park in Connecticut has been named the most budget-friendly option.

  • Quassy Amusement Park in Connecticut ranked No. 1 for affordability.
  • A day at Quassy costs approximately $76.43 per person, covering admission, parking, and accommodation.
  • Florida's Fun Spot America and Arizona's Castles N' Coasters also featured in the top three most affordable.

As UK households continue to grapple with the rising cost of living, the prospect of a family holiday, particularly one across the Atlantic, often feels out of reach. However, a new analysis by vacation rental site HomeToGo offers some welcome news for those dreaming of an American adventure, highlighting the most affordable theme parks in the US. The study, which assessed around 40 locations across more than 20 states, considered admission fees, parking costs, and the price of nearby accommodation to determine the best value for money.

Topping the list for affordability is Quassy Amusement Park in Connecticut. For a single person, the estimated daily cost at Quassy is an attractive $76.43 (approximately £60), which includes a $33 admission ticket, $9.40 for parking, and an average of $34.03 for overnight accommodation. Located on Lake Quassapaug in Middlebury, Quassy offers a variety of amusement park rides and a waterpark, providing a comprehensive family experience without the premium price tag often associated with major US attractions.

While Florida is renowned for its iconic theme parks, the HomeToGo study suggests that families seeking the most economical options might need to venture further north. Even within Florida, more budget-conscious choices exist. Fun Spot America Themepark in Orlando secured the second spot for affordability, with an estimated daily cost of $117.56 (around £92) per person. This includes a $59.95 ticket and $57.61 for accommodation, with the added benefit of free parking. Fun Spot America is home to Orlando's only wooden roller coaster, White Lightning, alongside other attractions like bumper cars and multi-level go-kart tracks.

Completing the top three most affordable parks is Castles N’ Coasters in Phoenix, Arizona. A day here is estimated to cost $129.63 (approximately £102) per person, comprising a $31 ticket, free parking, and accommodation averaging $98.63. This West Coast park offers classic rides, a zip line, mini golf, and a substantial arcade. The study also noted that several well-known parks, including nine Six Flags locations, made the list, with Six Flags Frontier City in Oklahoma ranking fifth. More popular, high-profile parks like Universal Islands of Adventure and Disney's Epcot also featured, though significantly lower down the affordability scale.

For UK families, understanding these cost differences is crucial when planning a holiday budget. With average energy bills still a concern, and food prices remaining elevated, every saving counts. The average annual energy bill for a typical household is currently around £1,690, while food price inflation, though easing, has still seen staple items rise significantly over the past two years. Housing costs, whether mortgage payments or rental prices, also continue to exert pressure on household finances, making careful financial planning for any discretionary spending, such as holidays, more important than ever.

Why this matters: This information offers practical financial guidance for UK families considering a US holiday, helping them identify more affordable options amidst ongoing cost-of-living pressures at home.

What this means for you: What this means for you: If you're a UK family dreaming of a US theme park holiday, this research provides a clear roadmap to more budget-friendly options, potentially saving you hundreds of pounds compared to traditional, more expensive destinations like Florida's major resorts. This allows you to allocate savings towards other household expenses or make a holiday more feasible.
