Fifteen years after captivating the nation on Britain's Got Talent, pianist Jean Martyn reflects on a career she describes as "terrific." The former music teacher, who reached the final of the ITV talent show in 2011, continues to perform regularly, entertaining audiences across the globe and maintaining a busy schedule of concerts and online streams.
Martyn's journey to national recognition began somewhat serendipitously, with her late husband secretly entering her into the competition. Despite an initial audition with a portable piano wrapped in a duvet, she quickly impressed judges Michael McIntyre, Amanda Holden, and Simon Cowell, with Holden famously likening her to "Victoria Wood on acid." This led to a spot in the final ten, catapulting her into a new realm of fame and a subsequent tour of major UK arenas.
A poignant moment during the post-BGT tour stands out for Martyn. Just before performing at the O2 Arena in June 2011, she received the devastating news of her mother's passing. Recalling her mother's encouragement to "get on there and entertain," Martyn delivered an emotionally charged performance. After her set, host Stephen Mulhern guided her to share the news with the audience, who responded with a silent, then standing, ovation.
Since her BGT appearance, Martyn's career has flourished beyond UK borders. She has performed in the United States, across Europe, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Her engagements have included playing for royalty, meeting numerous celebrities, and even featuring on 'Holland's Got Talent'. Now residing in Stoke-on-Trent with her husband, Hans, whom she married in 2020, Martyn also leverages social media to stream live performances to a global audience.
Despite her international commitments, Martyn remains connected to her roots. She still plans local concerts, including an upcoming performance at St John's Church in Walsall Wood on 26th June. She attributes her enduring passion to her father's early advice to "go out there and share that talent," a sentiment she continues to embody through her vibrant musical career.
