Jeanie Buss seeks to block siblings' sale of Lakers family stake

Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is attempting to prevent her siblings from selling the family's remaining stake in the NBA franchise.

  • Jeanie Buss's lawyer states her approval is needed for the sale of the 17.8% stake.
  • The Buss family trust, comprising Jerry Buss's six children, voted to sell their remaining shares.
  • Josh Kushner and Bob Iger agreed a deal last week to buy a controlling interest in the Lakers from Mark Walter for $12.5bn.

Los Angeles Lakers governor Jeanie Buss is trying to block her siblings' sale of the family's remaining stake in the NBA franchise. The Buss family, who have owned a share of the Lakers since 1979, released a statement on Monday saying they had voted to sell their remaining 17.8% stake to an incoming ownership group.

Josh Kushner and former Disney chief executive Bob Iger agreed a deal last week to buy a controlling interest in the Lakers from Mark Walter for $12.5bn (£9.3bn). Walter had bought his share from the Buss family last year for about $10bn (£7.45bn), a deal that ensured Jeanie Buss would remain as governor until 2030.

However, Jeanie Buss's lawyer, Adam Streisand, has stated that any vote for a sale "would be and is void" without her approval as one of three co-trustees. The lawyer's letter to her five siblings, according to ESPN, also said that co-trustees are bound to ensure a minimum 15% ownership requirement is maintained for Jeanie Buss to remain controlling owner.
