States schools in Jersey have implemented a new uniform policy, limiting the number of branded items to five per child. This measure, announced in 2023, is set to be in place for the new school term next month.
The States indicated this policy should offer "a welcome relief" for families, noting that some schools previously required up to 11 branded items, leading to costs of hundreds for uniform, PE kit, and equipment. The Education Minister, Deputy Catherine Curtis, stated that reducing costs for parents is "an important part of ensuring access to education for all."
The policy follows recommendations from a Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) market study into school uniform supply. The JCRA found that branded items accounted for approximately 40% of uniform requirements, with total costs ranging from £115 to £294 per child. JCRA chief executive Tim Ringsdore commented that the new policy aims to balance school identity with manageable costs for parents.
Additionally, the 31 States schools in Jersey must ensure affordability and provide access to second-hand uniform options. Eligible families can also receive up to £150 in government support for back-to-school costs for each child.
