Jobseeker's Allowance Guidance Updated for Work and Self-Employment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has updated its guidance for Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) claimants, including new information on self-employment and how part-time earnings affect benefits.

  • Guidance for Jobseeker's Allowance has been updated to include information on self-employment.
  • New guidance has been added on how part-time earnings can affect New Style Jobseeker's Allowance.
  • Claimants must inform the DWP if they or their partner do any type of paid or unpaid work while claiming JSA.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has updated its guidance for individuals claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). The changes include new information on self-employment and how part-time earnings can affect New Style Jobseeker's Allowance.

Claimants are required to inform the DWP if they or their partner undertake any form of paid or unpaid work. This is because any hours worked may alter the amount of Jobseeker's Allowance and National Insurance credits received.

Guidance for Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance has been removed. However, updates clarify when claimants or their partners can work specific hours and still receive Income-based JSA, and how earnings deductions are calculated.

Those claiming JSA who are working will need to complete a B7 pay form with their work coach at Jobcentre Plus, detailing the work carried out.

What this means for you: If you claim Jobseeker's Allowance, you must inform the DWP if you or your partner do any type of paid or unpaid work, including self-employment, as this may change your benefit amount and National Insurance credits.
