Joe Carpenter aims to impress England selectors in Harlequins match

Sale full-back Joe Carpenter is focused on outshining George Furbank this weekend to advance his case for an England recall. Their teams, Sale and Harlequins, are set to meet on Sunday.

  • Joe Carpenter has not been part of Steve Borthwick's England set-up since July 2025.
  • George Furbank was England's first-choice full-back this summer before an appendicitis.
  • Sale will play Harlequins at Corpacq Stadium on Sunday.

Sale full-back Joe Carpenter has stated that part of his focus this weekend is on outshining Harlequins' George Furbank. Carpenter aims to use the match to advance his case for an England recall.

Carpenter has not been involved with the England squad since earning his only Test cap in July 2025. Furbank was England's first-choice full-back this summer before an appendicitis sidelined him.

The two players' teams will meet at Sale's Corpacq Stadium on Sunday. Harlequins are currently seeking their first points of the season.

Carpenter attributes his strong start to the season partly to missing out on England selection, which allowed him a full club pre-season. He stated that having back-to-back strong performances will put him in the best position for potential involvement in November.
