Comedian and broadcaster John Robins has released a memoir titled "Thirst," which explores his relationship with alcohol and his subsequent path to sobriety. The book is structured around specific drinks that he states changed his life, including an instance of drinking wine at age seven and beer at scout camp.
As an adult, Robins, known for his shows on Radio X and BBC5 Live, reportedly romanticised pubs, viewing them as places of peace and refuge. He also co-hosted a podcast, The Moon Under Water, where guests described their ideal pub.
Robins reveals that a belief in his own control kept him drinking for an extended period. He states that occasionally completing Dry January convinced him he was not an addict, although a GP reportedly told him to "sort your fucking life out." Currently sober, Robins is now grappling with depression, which he notes alcohol had been shielding him from.
