Joni Mitchell, the 82-year-old Canada-born singer-songwriter, has become a US citizen. She shared footage of her citizenship ceremony on her Instagram account, alongside a photo with an American flag, captioned: “A journey that began 62 years ago.”
Mitchell first moved to the US in the mid-1960s. This new citizenship means she is now able to vote in US elections, a right she had previously expressed not having.
Born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, in 1943, Mitchell married US folk singer Chuck Mitchell in 1965 and subsequently moved to the US. She established herself on the US folk music circuit, releasing her debut album in 1968 and later settling in California, where she currently resides in Santa Barbara.
