Josh Kerr has been crowned Britain's first winner at the Ultimate Championship, dominating the 1500m final in Budapest and securing a $150,000 prize. This victory marks the conclusion of the inaugural edition of athletics' new global event.
The 28-year-old athlete, who also smashed the 27-year mile world record at the London Diamond League and won Commonwealth Games gold this summer, swept past American Yared Nuguse to take the win in three minutes 29.35 seconds.
Kerr, who began his year by reclaiming the world indoor 3,000m title, told BBC Sport, "I am a major championship guy and I will always say that." He added, "From seven weeks ago in London, I went home, I chopped wood and carried water and I was ready to go again."
Although not qualifying by right, Kerr received an exceptional invitation from World Athletics for the championship, which is reserved for reigning global champions, Diamond League winners, and others based on world ranking. The event featured top athletes competing for a new title and a total prize fund of $10m (£7.4m).
