Josh Kerr has qualified for the Commonwealth Games mile final in Glasgow, 11 days after breaking Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old world mile record. The mile event has been reinstated in the athletics programme for the first time in 60 years.
Kerr, who achieved a new world best of 3:42.66, described the upcoming final as a “war” on home ground. He will be joined by Scottish teammate and former 1500m world champion Jake Wightman.
Australia’s Cameron Myers, whose heat time was just over a second slower than Kerr’s world record, is also a strong contender. Wightman noted that Myers, aged 20, has shown an innate ability to perform under pressure.
Kerr has spent time in Scotland since his record-breaking run in London, focusing on resetting and preparing for his medal bid. He acknowledged the emotional impact of breaking the world record, stating it took significant effort to refocus.
