Professor Karl Deisseroth, 54, has been awarded a Nobel Prize in medicine. He shared this year’s prize with two researchers in Germany for their contributions to optogenetics.

Optogenetics is a developing field of brain science that uses light in conjunction with genes to activate or deactivate neurons within living brains.

Stanford University released a video on Monday showing Professor Deisseroth informing his two daughters and one of his sons about the award. He reportedly took a break from congratulatory calls to prepare school lunches for his children.
