Great Britain's Sonay Kartal secured a straight-set victory over China's Wang Xinyu at the China Open, marking her second tour match since returning from a six-month back injury. The 24-year-old, ranked 129th, defeated the 31st seed 6-3 6-2.
Kartal was expected to face world number one Elena Rybakina in the last 32, but Rybakina was unexpectedly beaten in three sets by Armenian world number 118 Alina Charaeva. Kartal expressed her happiness to be back, stating, "I am super happy to play here and I think that shows in my tennis."
In the men's draw, top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals after a 6-0 6-3 win against China's Juncheng Shang. Zverev will now face Novak Djokovic, who has won the China Open six times and has an undefeated record in Beijing.
Zverev, who has won the French Open and US Open this season, could become world number one if he wins both the China Open and the upcoming Shanghai Masters. Current world number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters due to a knee injury.
Elsewhere, British player Harriet Dart lost in three sets to American 10th seed Iva Jovic. World number three Carlos Alcaraz reached the quarter-finals of the Japan Open, defeating Matteo Arnaldi 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.
