A Kent riding centre, which provides vital therapeutic services for individuals with disabilities, has voiced its immense gratitude for the public's overwhelming support after 50 saddles were stolen in a recent break-in. The Leybourne Grange Riding Centre in West Malling confirmed the incident occurred in the early hours of 7 July 2026, describing it as a "shocking" and "severe" blow to their operations.
Jo Fletcher, co-manager at the charity for over three decades, highlighted the immediate and profound impact of the theft. She expressed disbelief at the nature of the crime, given the centre's mission. However, the community's response has been swift and generous, with more than 60 saddles donated and over £6,000 raised through various fundraising initiatives.
The centre supports over 70 people who rely on its services for therapeutic purposes and as a means to pursue a fulfilling hobby that significantly benefits their wellbeing. Ms Fletcher emphasised that these donations are crucial, enabling the charity to continue providing its essential services without interruption.
Beyond replacing the stolen equipment, the financial contributions will be directed towards enhancing the centre's security measures. Plans include updating existing security systems and installing new CCTV cameras, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future and protect their valuable assets.
The "overwhelming compassion" shown by the public has not only provided practical assistance but has also significantly boosted the spirits of those associated with the centre, according to Ms Fletcher. She noted that the response serves as a powerful reminder of the kindness still prevalent within the community. Kent Police have confirmed that their investigation into the reported theft is still active and ongoing.
