The unexpected twist in an attempted bank robbery in Beltsville, Maryland, has left authorities perplexed, with the accused suspect allegedly using a stolen kitten as leverage during the heist. The Prince George's County Police Department confirmed the arrest of a suspect following Monday morning's incident at a PNC bank branch, where the presence of the animal raised suspicions.
The three-and-a-half-month-old tuxedo cat, named Magnolia, was reportedly taken from her adoption habitat at a local Pet Supplies Plus store by the suspect. According to Beltsville Community Cats, the rescue shelter responsible for caring for the kitten, the man took Magnolia across the car park and into the bank before attempting to use her as part of his demands during an attempted robbery.
Fortunately, the would-be robber's plans were thwarted, and he was apprehended by police. Although the suspect's name remains undisclosed pending further investigation, details surrounding the incident have sparked concern within the local community. Magnolia, however, seems to have made a connection with one of the bank staff members during the ordeal, reportedly staying safe in their office until authorities arrived.
Employees at Pet Supplies Plus revealed that the suspect had been regularly visiting the store for around two weeks prior to the incident, consistently showing interest in Magnolia. It appears that on Monday, he exploited a weakness in the cat adoption area's security measures and made off with the kitten. Beltsville Community Cats has expressed relief that Magnolia was returned safely and is now available for adoption.
The charity took to social media prior to the incident, posting about Magnolia's availability for adoption. Following her dramatic turn of events, they jokingly stated that her "brief stint in a life of crime" is behind her and she can now focus on stealing hearts through conventional means.
