A bloodstained vest worn by the late football star Kevin Keegan during his famous bicycle crash on the BBC TV show Superstars is scheduled for public display. Keegan came off his bike in Bracknell, Berkshire, in 1976 while competing in the programme.
Mark Ashwell, now 68, is donating the signed blue singlet to the National Football Museum. He was one of two teenagers helping at the event who received the vest from Keegan after the show. Ashwell stated he put it in his pyjama drawer and rediscovered it after Keegan's death in July, noting it still has bloodstains on the word 'Superstar'.
Keegan, who played for Liverpool at the time, crashed during a qualifying race with Belgian footballer Gilbert Van Binst. Commentary from the programme described Keegan "wobbling all over the track" before the bikes' wheels made contact, sending him sliding. He later reported being "a bit grazed" and subsequently won the restaged heat.
Ashwell, who is president of Wokingham Town Football Club, will make an official presentation to the Manchester museum in September with his friend Dave Hills. He also revealed he possesses another vest Keegan wore on the same day when he won the steeplechase, which he might keep.
