Kevin Pietersen believes his unexpected return to the England setup can help the team navigate the challenges of international cricket, while also opening the door to a role in next year's Ashes series. Over a decade after his international playing career concluded, Pietersen has taken on a new advisory position.
This new part-time role, which is balanced around existing commitments, came about after an approach from limited-overs head coach Brendon McCullum. Pietersen's involvement is designed to shape England's World Cup campaign in South Africa next winter, and he has been spending time with the squad during their ongoing series against Sri Lanka.
Pietersen, who is 46, stated he is ready to offer support, having experienced various aspects of an England cricketer's career. While he clarified he is not seeking to be the head coach, he aims to assist McCullum in the team's pursuit of competitiveness. He has also had conversations with new Test coach Stephen Fleming about language to use with Test batters ahead of the tour of South Africa and next summer's Ashes series, though he noted he cannot commit to extensive time.
