The Environment Agency has completed a major upgrade to flood defences at Keyhaven Harbour in Hampshire, replacing the Avon Water tidal outfall. This work aims to better protect around 40 properties from flooding as winter approaches.
The original outfall, which forms a barrier between the Solent and Avon Water, had significantly corroded. The new structure is designed to prevent water in the River Avon from backing up during high tides, which previously led to flooding upstream.
Artur Podsiadly, Environment Agency project manager, stated that these vital upgrades were completed ahead of winter, when tidal locking can contribute to flooding issues at Keyhaven. He also highlighted that extreme weather is becoming more common due to climate change.
The announcement coincides with this year’s Flood Action Week, which started on 12 October. The Environment Agency is urging the public to check their flood risk, create a flood plan, and sign up for flood warnings.
