The Fish Health Inspectorate (FHI) has confirmed outbreaks of Koi herpesvirus (KHV) disease in fish at sites across England and Wales. KHV is a serious viral disease that affects all varieties of common and ornamental carp species and can lead to large-scale mortalities.
When KHV disease is confirmed at a site, the FHI implements statutory controls to limit its spread. These controls restrict the movement of aquatic animals, including eggs and gametes, into, out of, or within the designated area without FHI consent. Disposal of dead aquatic animals must follow approved methods for Category 2 animal-by-product waste.
Site operators are required to notify the FHI immediately if mortalities re-occur or spread, and to seek written permission in advance for any physical changes to sites within the designated area. There is no risk to public health from KHV disease.
