Kenya's Brigid Kosgei, an Olympic silver medallist and former London marathon winner, powered to a convincing victory in the women's race at the Great North Run. She completed the 13.1-mile course in one hour, six minutes and 15 seconds, finishing over two minutes ahead of compatriot Sheila Chepkirui.
Great Britain's Eilish McColgan, 35, withdrew early in the half-marathon after suffering a foot injury. McColgan, who finished third in last year's event, was continuing her return to racing following a broken toe sustained during the London Marathon in April.
In the men's race, American Zouhair Talbi, 31, secured the title with a strong finish in the final mile, clocking 59:47. He overcame last year's champion Alex Mutiso, who finished 14 seconds behind. David Weir won his 10th Great North Run title in the men's wheelchair race, while Melanie Woods won the women's wheelchair event.
The 45th edition of the Great North Run saw an estimated 63,000 runners participate, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
