Kylian Mbappé, the France captain, has ended his two-decade association with Nike to sign a new boot deal with the Swiss challenger company On. This move also sees Mbappé become a shareholder in the brand.

On, a sports and leisure brand known for running and tennis, is set to make a significant entry into football next year. The company has also appointed Thierry Henry as its football director and unveiled its first boots, the Lightspray Prototype, which will be available to the mass market from next year.

Mbappé expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership, stating, “From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow’s game.” He added, “We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”

Nike acknowledged Mbappé's departure, noting his journey with them began when he was nine years old. The company stated, “Over nearly two decades, we’ve shared moments that shaped the game and he has been an important part of Nike Football.”

Why this matters: This move represents a significant shift in the competitive landscape of football endorsements, as a major player like Mbappé joins a new challenger brand.
