Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is now eligible to return to the court after serving a one-month ban for testing positive for cocaine. The suspension concluded on Thursday, 3 September.
The 31-year-old was provisionally suspended on 4 August after a sample from the Mallorca Open in June was found to contain benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite. Kyrgios informed investigators that he used cocaine at a nightclub in Magaluf in the early hours of 20 June.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted that the cocaine use occurred outside of competition. Kyrgios's potential three-month ban was reduced to one month after he entered a treatment programme. He will also forfeit his prize money and ranking points from the Mallorca tournament.
Kyrgios, currently ranked 918th in the world, has played only four singles matches this season due to ongoing knee and wrist injuries. After his initial suspension, he stated he would step away from social media and public life for 28 days to "focus on getting myself right."
