Tennis player Nick Kyrgios is facing a potential ban of up to four years after testing positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist provided the sample on 22 June, during a grass court event in Mallorca, and is currently serving a mandatory provisional suspension.
The severity of the ban hinges on whether Kyrgios can satisfy investigators that he took the drug out of competition. If he can prove this, the ban could be as short as one month, particularly if he agrees to enter a treatment programme. His provisional suspension began on 4 August, meaning he could potentially be eligible to compete again from 4 September.
A player is considered 'in competition' from the start of the draws they are competing in until they leave the tournament. Kyrgios was deemed 'in competition' in Stuttgart between 8-12 June, and in Mallorca on 21 and 22 June, the day he submitted the positive sample.
Previous cases under the World Anti Doping Agency Code, which changed in 2021, show varying outcomes. Imran Sibille, who tested positive for cocaine in May 2025, received a one-month ban after proving out-of-competition use and agreeing to a treatment programme.
