The Labour government has reiterated its commitment to delivering 1.5 million homes by the end of this Parliament. Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Housing Baroness Taylor of Stevenage stated in response to a written parliamentary question that the government is making progress towards this housing target.
However, analysis suggests that Labour is set to miss its housing target deadline. Planning consultancy Lanpro's analysis indicates that delivery is 10% down on the ten-year average and below the 300,000 homes per year widely considered necessary to meet Labour's pledge. At the current rate, only half of the promised homes are likely to be delivered.
The government has also announced plans for a new generation of towns, with seven locations across England put forward. Ministers stated that each new town is expected to deliver at least 10,000 homes. Baroness Taylor of Stevenage noted that the Taskforce recommended new towns should aim for at least 40% affordable housing, with half for social rent, and the government is currently considering these recommendations.
