Landlords urged to provide more guidance for low-energy homes

New guidance recommends landlords, Build-to-Rent operators, and letting agents offer comprehensive support to tenants in low-energy homes, from initial enquiry through to later tenancies.

  • New guidance advises landlords and letting agents to support tenants in low-energy homes.
  • The Future Homes Hub and Good Homes Alliance issued the guidance.
  • Support should cover marketing, pre-move-in, aftercare, and maintenance.

Landlords, Build-to-Rent operators, and letting agents are being urged to provide more support to tenants in low-energy homes. New guidance suggests that despite lower running costs, new tenants can find these properties confusing.

The Future Homes Hub and Good Homes Alliance state that all-electric properties increasingly feature systems such as heat pumps, mechanical ventilation, solar PV, and smart electricity tariffs. Tenants often have fewer opportunities than homebuyers to understand these systems before moving in.

Ross Holleron, head of homes at the Future Homes Hub, said the industry has made progress in improving new home performance. He added that the next step is ensuring residents have the knowledge and confidence to fully benefit from these homes, particularly renters who rely on support from landlords and agents.

The guidance advises that support should not be limited to a single handover event. Instead, it should begin during marketing and lettings, continue before move-in, and extend into aftercare, repairs, and maintenance. Suggested measures include short videos and QR codes before occupation, with information introduced gradually.

What this means for you: If you are a tenant in a low-energy home, you may receive more comprehensive guidance from your landlord or letting agent on how to use the property's systems effectively.
