England rugby icon Lawrence Dallaglio is putting his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner's medal up for sale. The auction comes as the 54-year-old faces bankruptcy and ongoing financial troubles.
Dallaglio, a key member of the England squad that famously defeated Australia 20-17 in the 2003 final, was declared bankrupt last year due to hundreds of thousands of pounds of debt. His winner's medal is being auctioned at Budds in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, with an estimated value of £50,000 to £80,000.
The collection also includes his 2007 World Cup runners-up medal, estimated at £10,000, along with his 2003 Six Nations winner's medal, British and Irish Lions cap, England cap, and individual awards from his time with Wasps. The entire collection could potentially raise up to £180,000.
Speaking on The High Performance podcast since his bankruptcy last May, Dallaglio acknowledged, "Much of it was my own doing. That's the first thing you have to acknowledge. I could have done things a lot better." He attributed his bankruptcy to his divorce from his estranged wife Alice.
