Left-wing political outsider Abdul El-Sayed is projected to win the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan, a contest that highlighted divisions within the party. The former public health official is on course to defeat moderate four-term Democratic congresswoman Haley Stevens, according to CBS News.

El-Sayed has advocated for left-wing policies, including universal healthcare, abolishing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and ending unconditional US military aid to Israel. He posted on X, stating, "We won," and expressed pride in being the Democratic nominee for US Senate.

Stevens congratulated El-Sayed, offering her support as he prepares to face Republican and Trump ally Mike Rogers in November's midterm elections. If El-Sayed wins in November, he would become the first Muslim US senator.
