Network Rail has announced that significant upgrade works between Leicester and Kettering will lead to service disruptions over two consecutive weekends. The essential maintenance, aimed at improving reliability and resilience on the busy Midland Main Line, is scheduled for Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June, and again on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July.
During these periods, no trains will operate between Leicester and Kettering. Passengers planning to travel on these dates will need to use alternative arrangements, including rail replacement bus services. East Midlands Railway (EMR) services will be affected, with some routes diverted or terminating earlier than usual.
The extensive programme of works includes critical track renewals, which are vital for maintaining smooth and safe train operations. Additionally, engineers will be focusing on improving drainage systems along the route to prevent future weather-related disruptions. Bridge repairs are also part of the upgrades, ensuring the structural integrity of key infrastructure.
Network Rail has emphasised that these upgrades are crucial for the long-term performance of the railway line, benefiting thousands of passengers who use the route daily. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the closures, the organisation stated that carrying out these works over weekends helps to minimise disruption compared to weekday closures.
Passengers are strongly advised to check their journey plans in advance using the National Rail Enquiries website or their train operator's journey planner. Details of specific service alterations, including timings and locations of rail replacement buses, will be available closer to the dates of the works.
