Tammy Sandhu, originally from Leicester, has made history by becoming the UK's first ambassador to Vatican City from a minority background. The 44-year-old, who has a 20-year career in diplomatic services, received formal accreditation from Pope Leo XIV earlier this month.
Ms Sandhu's diplomatic career includes postings in Rabat, Brussels, San Francisco, and Chennai. She has spent the past year learning Italian and is now living in Rome, though she reportedly misses a Leicester curry.
She stated that her "truly multicultural" upbringing in Leicester, where her parents moved from Punjab in the 1960s, meant diplomatic roles came "quite naturally" to her. Ms Sandhu hopes her appointment will inspire others from similar backgrounds to consider careers in diplomacy.
Despite being the world's smallest sovereign state, Vatican City holds significant global reach through the Catholic Church's 1.4 billion followers and its moral influence on major global issues.
