Leicestershire are on the brink of relegation from Division One of the County Championship after an independent Cricket Discipline Panel deducted 27 points for breaching pitch regulations. The penalty stems from their victory over Glamorgan in August.
The points deduction, imposed midway through their penultimate match of the season, has sent the Foxes to the bottom of the table. The punishment included the loss of all 19 points earned from the Glamorgan win, an extra eight-point penalty, and a £5,000 fine. An additional eight-point deduction has been suspended for one year.
The club stated it "notes the Cricket Discipline Panel's decision" and is "reviewing its position and considering all available options." Leicestershire has 10 working days to appeal the decision.
Relegation to Division Two will be confirmed if the Foxes fail to beat Hampshire in their ongoing game at Uptonsteel Grace Road. Hampshire closed day two on 255-3 in their second innings, holding a lead of 225, making a Leicestershire victory a challenging prospect.
The club's battle to avoid the drop in their first Division One season after a 22-year absence had been boosted by the 42-run win against Glamorgan three weeks prior. Match officials had requested an inspection of the pitch after that game concluded, with Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson describing conditions as "tough" for batters.
