Leigh established a 12-10 lead at half-time with tries from Josh Charnley and Joe Ofahengaue. Bennison scored twice for York in the first half.
Further scores in the second half from Andy Badrock and David Armstrong extended Leigh's lead to 22-10. Bennison completed his hat-trick with eight minutes remaining, but Leigh maintained their advantage to win.
This 14th win of the season keeps Leigh in sixth place in the Super League standings. They are now level on points with Warrington and Hull KR, who are above them, and hold a four-point buffer over seventh-placed St Helens in the play-off spots. York remains in 10th position.
