Major travel disruption is expected today, 14 August, between Lewes and Haywards Heath after a Southern train derailed in the Lewes area on Thursday, 13 August. The incident involved the 2:24pm Southern train from London Victoria, which was travelling to Eastbourne.
As of 8:30am today, all lines between Lewes and Haywards Heath are closed, and all services on this route are cancelled. Other affected routes include services between Ore, Eastbourne, Seaford and Brighton, and between Ore, Eastbourne and London Victoria.
Rail replacement buses are operating between Haywards Heath and Lewes, stopping at Cooksbridge and Plumpton. Southern has also added extra carriages to services between Brighton and Hastings, and Brighton and Seaford, where possible. Passengers travelling towards Eastbourne or Hastings will need to change trains at Brighton.
Passengers can use Southern services between Brighton and London Victoria, Thameslink services between Brighton and London Bridge, and Gatwick Express services between Brighton and London Victoria at no additional cost. London Underground services between all London terminals and Southeastern services between Hastings and London terminals are also available. Brighton and Hove bus services on routes 28, 29, 29B, and 29X are also accepting tickets.
National Rail advises allowing at least 60 minutes of additional journey time and checking journey details before travelling. Official investigations into the cause of the derailment are underway.
