Peterborough has recorded the highest number of pothole damage claims in the UK for the period of January to May 2026, according to new data from Tesco Insurance. Tonbridge and Northampton followed Peterborough in the insurer's ranking of towns and cities with the most claims.
Tesco Insurance reported a 25% increase in pothole damage claims between January and May 2026 compared to the first six months of 2025. Claims also saw a 12% surge in January alone, when compared to the entire second half of 2025.
The average successful claim for pothole damage has risen by 41%, from £3,814 to £5,380. Wheels accounted for the highest number of claims in 2026, followed by suspension and engine damage.
Drivers may be able to claim repair costs from their insurer, though this could be recorded as an 'at-fault' claim if costs cannot be recovered from another party. It is also possible to seek compensation from the organisation responsible for road maintenance, by gathering evidence such as photos of the pothole and damage, and keeping repair receipts.
