Lewisham Council's head of bereavement services, Colin Burgess, has resided in a four-bedroom detached house within Grove Park Cemetery for the past 15 years. He lives there with his wife, three adult children, and a dog.
Gravedigger Glen Webb and his wife Wendy also live in a bungalow on the cemetery grounds. Their homes are provided as part of their employment, and they are considered occupants rather than tenants.
Lewisham is one of the few London boroughs where cemetery staff live on site. Either Mr Burgess or Mr Webb are required to close the gates at night, and one typically remains on site for security.
Mr Burgess manages five cemeteries and a crematorium for Lewisham Council. His daughter, 18-year-old Poppy, who has lived in the cemetery for most of her life, is pursuing studies in health and social care.
