Liebmann and Douglass Smash Swimming World Records on Same Day

Germany's Johannes Liebmann and American Kate Douglass both set new swimming world records on Saturday, captivating audiences at events in Paris and California.

  • Johannes Liebmann, 19, broke the men's 1500m freestyle record by 3.88 seconds at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris.
  • Kate Douglass, 24, set a new women's 50m freestyle record of 23.49 seconds during heats at the Pan Pacific Championships in California.
  • Liebmann's time of 14 minutes 26.79 seconds made him the first swimmer to complete the 1500m freestyle in under 14:30.

Germany's Johannes Liebmann and American Kate Douglass delivered a double dose of swimming history on Saturday, each setting new world records at separate events. Liebmann, 19, made waves at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris, shaving nearly four seconds off the men's 1500m freestyle record to claim his first international gold medal.

Liebmann completed the distance in an astonishing 14 minutes 26.79 seconds, 3.88 seconds faster than the previous record held by American Bobby Finke. This achievement also marked the first time a swimmer has gone under 14:30 for the distance, representing the biggest time reduction to the record since Grant Hackett in 2001.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, two-time Olympic champion Kate Douglass, 24, shattered the women's 50m freestyle record for the second time this summer. She clocked 23.49 seconds during heats at the Pan Pacific Championships in California, regaining the record from compatriot Gretchen Walsh.
