Lincoln City return to second-tier football after 65 years

Lincoln City played their first second-tier football match since 1961, despite a 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth.

  • Lincoln City last played second-tier football in 1961.
  • The club spent £10m over the summer on ground modernisations.
  • Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw have jointly taken over as managers.

Lincoln City made their return to second-tier football on Saturday, 65 years after their last appearance at this level. The Imps, who won League One last season, hosted Portsmouth at Sincil Bank, drawing an attendance of 10,545.

Despite a 3-1 loss to Portsmouth, which marked their second consecutive defeat of the season, the mood among supporters remained upbeat. The club has undertaken significant changes, including a £10m investment in ground modernisations over the summer, which included a new fan village and upgrades to the stands.

In the dugout, Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw have taken over as joint managers from Michael Skubala. Co-manager Tom Shaw described it as "an amazing day for the club," acknowledging the increased quality and pace of play at this level.

Why this matters: Lincoln City's progression from non-league to the Championship in 10 years demonstrates that success can be achieved without aggressive spending, offering a model for other EFL clubs.
