Lindsay Clancy's defence attorney, Kevin Reddington, has asked Judge William Sullivan to declare her not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. The request was made on Thursday, six days after Clancy's murder trial in Massachusetts ended in a deadlock.
Reddington argued that prosecutors failed to prove Clancy knew killing her three young children was wrong, despite her mental illness. He contended that during the six-week trial, prosecutors did not present evidence that would allow a jury to find her guilty of first-degree murder.
Clancy, 36, has admitted to strangling her three children, Cora, five; Dawson, three; and eight-month-old Callan, on 24 January 2023, in their Duxbury home. She then attempted to end her own life, which left her paralysed.
The jury in Plymouth, Massachusetts, deliberated for seven days before Judge Sullivan declared a mistrial due to repeated reports of a deadlock. Reddington's motion stated that 11 of the 12 jurors were prepared to find Clancy not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.
