American ski great Lindsey Vonn has been named in the US Alpine ski team for the 2026-27 World Cup season. This selection comes despite considerable uncertainty surrounding her future in the sport following a severe injury.
Vonn suffered a horrific crash during the Olympic downhill race in February, sustaining multiple complex leg injuries and rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). She has since undergone eight surgeries and has not ruled out a return, though she stated in April that she was unsure if she would compete again.
The three-time Olympic medallist indicated that any potential return would not occur before the 2027-28 season. She noted that she still requires another surgery to remove metal and replace her ACL, which would be followed by at least six months of recovery.
The World Cup season is set to commence with a giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, on 24 October. The first downhill race is scheduled for 11 December in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
