Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) following an altercation with Philadelphia Union's Quinn Sullivan. The incident occurred during their 2-2 draw on Wednesday, with Messi reportedly slapping Sullivan around the back of the head late in the game.
Messi, 39, complained that Sullivan had elbowed him after he played the ball, prompting his reaction. While Sullivan reacted angrily, the referee quickly intervened. The MLS confirmed the fine but did not disclose the amount.
In the same match, Messi scored Miami's second goal, his first since the passing of his father. Inter Miami's Ian Fray was also fined by the MLS for grabbing Sullivan's neck during the bad-tempered game, which saw two red cards issued in stoppage time.
Miami currently holds second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing leaders Nashville by seven points.
