Veteran American singer Lionel Richie has been forced to postpone two upcoming tour dates after experiencing a health scare while performing in St. Paul, Minnesota. The 77-year-old music legend, known for hits like 'All Night Long' and 'Dancing on the Ceiling', reportedly told the audience he was feeling dizzy during his set on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred during the opening night of his 'Sing a Song All Night Long' tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. Richie's saxophonist, Dino Soldo, later informed the crowd that the singer was unwell and unable to continue the show, which had to be cut short. Social media posts from fans showed Richie performing 'Dancing on the Ceiling' before signalling that he would finish the song seated. He then addressed the audience, humorously remarking on the unusual nature of performing the song while sitting down, indicating it was a 'bad sign'.
Following the early conclusion of the concert, Richie was reportedly taken to hospital. Sources indicate this was a precautionary measure to ensure his well-being after the on-stage incident. Live Nation Chicago, the concert promoter, released a statement confirming the postponements, stating, "under the advisement by doctors to rest and return to full health, Lionel Richie has postponed his next two shows."
The affected concerts were scheduled for Friday in Chicago, Illinois, and Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire are now expected to resume their tour on Tuesday, June 30, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The statement conveyed Richie's regret over the inconvenience caused to fans, adding that he is "heartbroken to postpone these two shows and cannot wait to be back performing for his fans." Rescheduled dates for the postponed shows are expected to be announced shortly.
Richie's career spans decades, beginning in the 1970s as a songwriter and co-lead singer of the Motown group Commodores. He launched a hugely successful solo career in 1982, releasing his debut album featuring the chart-topping single 'Truly'. His enduring popularity means that news of his health scare has prompted an outpouring of supportive messages from fans across social media, wishing him a swift recovery.
