Liverpool's USA Tour Exposes Squad Gaps for New Head Coach Iraola

Liverpool's pre-season tour in the USA, the first under new head coach Andoni Iraola, highlighted significant squad deficiencies despite some positive performances from young players.

  • Liverpool secured wins against Sunderland and Wrexham but concluded their USA tour with a 4-2 defeat to Leeds.
  • Head coach Andoni Iraola has yet to meet several key first-team players, including Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, who return to training on Wednesday.
  • The departure of Mohamed Salah in March has left a gap, and Liverpool also face issues at right-back and in central defence.

Andoni Iraola's inaugural pre-season tour as Liverpool's head coach saw the team secure victories over Sunderland in Nashville and Wrexham in New York. However, the tour concluded with a 4-2 defeat against Leeds in Chicago.

The tour reportedly exposed significant gaps in the squad, with Iraola yet to meet or coach several key players, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, and new signing Víctor Muñoz. These players are expected to join the squad for training at the AXA on Wednesday, with Mac Allister still absent due to World Cup commitments.

The club is facing challenges in several areas, notably the lack of a replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose departure was announced in March. Injuries, including a serious knee injury to Conor Bradley, have also left Liverpool light at right-back. While young talents like Nyoni impressed, the team is said to lack Premier League experience in central defence, and Ifeanyi Ndukwe will be unavailable this season due to work permit issues.

Dominik Szoboszlai, who recently signed a new five-year contract, emerged as a key figure and a popular choice among fans during the tour. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones's performances and reactions reportedly did not impress Iraola, particularly his struggle to adapt to the new coach's requirements and a perceived petulant reaction regarding the captain's armband.

Why this matters: The identified squad gaps and the need for transfers could impact Liverpool's performance as they prepare for the upcoming Premier League season.
